Our Process

From First Steps to a Service Dog Partnership

Finding the right psychiatric service dog is an important decision. At Twisted Clovers Service Dogs, we believe successful partnerships begin with thoughtful planning, realistic expectations, and a clear understanding of what goes into developing a working service dog.

Whether you are exploring an available started dog or just beginning to learn about service dogs, our goal is to help you understand your options and determine the best path forward.

01 — Initial Inquiry & Application

Every successful partnership starts with a conversation.

The first step is learning more about you, your goals, and what you hope to gain from a service dog partnership.

We'll begin by discussing your daily life, the support you are seeking, your experience with dogs, and your expectations for a working service dog. This information helps us determine whether our program may be an appropriate fit and what options may be worth exploring.

Submitting an inquiry does not guarantee placement. Every potential partnership requires careful consideration of both the handler's needs and the dog's suitability.

02 — Consultation & Evaluation

Understanding your needs helps guide the right decision.

No two handlers have exactly the same needs, routines, or goals. Before identifying a potential match, we want to understand what a service dog would need to do to support you and what life with a working dog would look like in your household.

We consider factors such as:

  • The tasks and support you are seeking from a service dog.

  • Your daily routine, environment, and lifestyle.

  • Your experience with dogs and ability to participate in ongoing training.

  • Your expectations for public access, home life, and long-term partnership.

  • The practical and financial responsibilities of service dog ownership.

This process helps establish realistic expectations and allows us to discuss whether an available dog or another path may be more appropriate.

03 — Dog Selection & Matching

The right match is about more than a dog's appearance or obedience skills.

A successful service dog partnership depends on compatibility, temperament, training, and the needs of the individual handler.

When considering a potential match, we look at the dog's personality, confidence, behavior, existing skills, and suitability for the work being considered. We also discuss the dog's current training level, strengths, limitations, and any additional development that may be needed.

Not every dog is suited to every handler, and not every dog will be suited to service work. Our priority is to make thoughtful, informed decisions rather than rush a placement.

When a suitable candidate is identified, we will discuss the dog's background, training progress, price, and next steps before moving forward.

04 — Training & Transition

Training prepares the dog. Teamwork builds the partnership.

Service dog development involves much more than basic obedience. Depending on the individual dog's training stage and intended role, development may include foundational obedience, public-access preparation, task training, environmental confidence, and the ability to remain calm and focused in everyday situations.

Each dog progresses at an individual pace. Training timelines and readiness depend on the dog's demonstrated skills, temperament, and continued development.

Before a dog transitions to a new handler, we will discuss the skills the dog has learned, the areas that may require continued work, and the expectations for maintaining and developing those skills.

Handler education is an important part of this transition. A service dog partnership requires ongoing communication, consistent reinforcement, practice, and a commitment to the dog's well-being.

05 — Placement & Ongoing Support

Placement is the beginning of a partnership, not the end of the journey.

Bringing a service dog home involves adjustment for both the handler and the dog. New routines, environments, expectations, and responsibilities take time to establish.

We want handlers to understand what to expect during this transition and how to continue building on the dog's existing training. Before placement, we will discuss the dog's current abilities, the responsibilities involved in maintaining those skills, and any follow-up guidance or support available through our program.

Our goal is to help set each team up with realistic expectations and a strong foundation for continued progress.

A successful partnership is built through patience, consistency, trust, and a commitment to learning together.

Every Partnership Is Different

There is no single timeline or formula that guarantees a successful service dog partnership. Each handler has individual needs, and each dog brings a unique temperament, history, and set of abilities.

At Twisted Clovers Service Dogs, we believe careful evaluation and honest communication are essential throughout the process. We would rather take the time to identify an appropriate path than promise an outcome that may not be right for a particular team.
